For me, flipping through a brochure for sign frames, hanging systems and the hardware for creating retail displays sparks an abundance of creative ideas. No matter what retail signage needs your customers may have, chances are there is a display product on the market that can meet that need. There is a wide range of products on the market to frame and hang signs in retail applications. Finding reliable sources for high-quality products is an important start. I spoke with a few suppliers to give you an idea of the options that are available, and then offer ups some tips on strategies for matching up your customers’ needs with the products that are available.
RETAIL FRAME SYSTEMS
I spoke with Julien Aiglon, Division Manager of SignPro Systems, about their retail frame products. SignPro Systems is one of four divisions of Orbus. Two of the divisions focus on modular exhibit products, both portable and custom systems. A third division, Axis, specializes in event displays and graphics. A few of their products such as hanging fabric shapes and small kiosks touch on the retail display industry. This division immerses a company brand into the entire environment or setting of an event, such as corporate meetings, themed events and retail and commercial settings.
The SignPro Systems division has a large number of frames that can accommodate many different types of sign substrates. Their framed product line includes wall mount, projecting, suspended, directories, snap frames, desk stands, towers, pylons and a-frames. Each category has a large selection of sizes. A curved face gives many of their frames a distinctive look.
SPS’s directories incorporate the curved look of their other frames and come in various styles. The frames can be custom designed and additional frames can be added to the system creating a very versatile product. Utilizing the same non-glare lens as their other products, directories can be quickly and economically updated by popping out the lens and changing out the inserted graphic.
With a sleek curved design and removable non-glare lens, Sign Pro Systems frames are an economical and stylish choice.

Aiglon noted that SPS recognizes a need for low cost frames that can be produced quickly and are easily interchangeable. These are important factors to consider when choosing a frame supplier. Customers are looking for competitive pricing and a product that can be used long term and change with their needs.
Aiglon emphasized that their products are available only to the trade. Their online catalog does not contain any pricing and can be a helpful sales tool. A separate price guide containing trade pricing as well as manufacturers suggested retail pricing can be requested from the company. You can find more information about SPS on their Web site www.signprosystems.com or www.orbuscompany.com.

TRADESHOW EXHIBIT OPTIONS
Another company offering some innovative products is WS Display. This company sells wholesale products to sign companies and advertising agencies only and a resale certificate is required to access the wholesale pricing.
They feature a wide range of products, including portable trade show exhibits and retractable banner stands. For retail display applications, they have a large selection of indoor and outdoor frames. Metal frames with different base options and snap frames are just a couple types of frames they offer. Many of their frames come mounted on adjustable height stands.
One versatile product line, Aspen Fabric Frames, allows for framed fabric prints in a variety of heights and widths, single or double sided with floor, ceiling and wall mount options. Sizes up to 8' x 8' can make a high-impact retail display. Lights, mounting accessories and floor display feet are add-on options.
WS Display’s Tahoe Modular Displays are customizable modular systems that can be used as a back wall display in a retail setting. With desk, table, light and shelf options these displays are just one example of WS Display’s many unique products.
WS Display also offers in-house printing on a variety of substrates as well. Many of their products are larger than the printers of most retail sign companies. The ability to purchase both the frame and print from one company streamlines the purchasing process.
The company has in-house design capabilities as well and their graphics department and Web site are both helpful and informative. A large selection of unique products, competitive pricing and their lifetime warranties on most frames make this company a great supplier. HARDWARE AND KITS
For retail applications that require versatile installation options, HangUps is another supplier with many unique products. They have a downloadable brochure on their website www.hangups.com that showcases thousands of hardware, accessory and frame options.
The company features sign kits and frames, poster holders, ceiling mounted retractable devices, mounting hardware and a large selection of hooks, cables and chains for hanging signs. Their Sign-Trak System is an aluminum hanging system that works with Trak inserts to allow signs to be hung securely and changed quickly. They also have a Multi-Trak plastic system for lighter weight and temporary displays.
Another Hang-Ups product is their EZ Frame kits. These are custom decorator frames made of matte black plastic. The sides can be custom cut to any size and are connected with corner hardware. Signs up to 3/16" can be slid into the frame. An open side option allows signs to be slid out and changed without taking apart the frame.
Hang-Ups has a large selection of hardware and inexpensive parts to create custom products to meet your customer’s retail display needs. Inexpensive products like their poster holders and poster covers help create a polished look on a tight budget.

LIGHT BOXES
Another product worth mentioning is illuminated light box frames. One online source is www.lightboxes.us.com, which is a division of George Patton Associates, Inc. A few of their light box styles include LED, large format, outdoor, floor standing, tabletop, swing open and backlit posters. For customers with a little larger budget, these retail frames can make a big impact.
PRODUCT SELLING
Many suppliers offer accessory and hardware options to completely customize their products. A lot of these accessories can be beneficial to your customer and are also a great up-sell feature.
By familiarizing yourself with your customer’s needs you can match them up with both retail frames and accessories that will be the most effective for their display. Look at sizes, materials, mounting options and changeable features when helping your customer choose the right system.
SignPro Systems offers a handy sample case featuring nine different sized sample frames. The frames are packed into a metal presentation case. When using the demo kit for a sales presentation, Aiglon recommends the sign supplier take the time to go to the potential customer’s Web site and download their image. Utilizing the company’s logo and colors during the presentation is an inexpensive way to professionally showcase their options. Sign frames are a great finishing touch for retail signs. Having samples in your lobby is one way to educate your customers about options on the market.
A binder with supplier brochures kept at the front counter organizes product information and makes it easier for customers to purchase from you. As always educating your own company on the products, features and options of retail frames is the first step in selling these products.
Narrow down the product lines you would like to feature to just a few suppliers. Within these suppliers choose the products you think would be most beneficial to your clientele. Whether you display the actual frame or create a sample poster featuring pictures of frame options, having these displayed in your lobby is important since customers are visual and buy what they see.
