Rough Wall Finishing Tips

Installing films on a rough wall is one of the harder types of installation out there. There are several obstacles in your way that you don’t have when wrapping a vehicle: ridges, grouts and holes to name a few. If you can overcome these obstacles, the finished product will look nice. Here are some tips to follow:

1. Make sure your pull rate is roughly (no pun intended) two inches for every one second. This may change a little depending on what film you are using, so make sure to check the product bulletin as well.

2. This rate of speed may also change depending on the state of the wall. If you are working with a rough textured wall or grout lines that don’t exceed 1.5-inches, you  generally need a little more attention paid to the pull rate.

3. While you’re moving across the film with the heat gun, make sure that your pull rate allows you to watch the roller’s path. You will want to watch for loose bubbles or bridges that are left behind from the current pass.

Once the panel is up, run your fingers over the panel and check for popping noises, which indicate where bubbles are. To remove these bubbles, pop both sides with a fine air release tool. Work the air out in place and then run your 1,000-degree heat over the area again. Use a rivet brush with firm pressure to finish it off.

When you’re finished, you’ll want a dull finish that indicates that the film has taken the shape of the texture you are laying it to, smooth walls will not have as dull of a finish as the heavily textured walls do.
