Digital signage technology developer maker LG Display, Seoul, Korea, announces that it is developing a flexible electronic-paper screen that's approximately the size of a tabloid newspaper. The screen measures 25 cm x 40 cm (19” diagonal screen size) and is 0.3 mm thin. LG Display is using a metal foil instead of a glass substrate so it retains flexibility. The company says the screen is the largest flexible e-paper display yet produced. The e-paper offers a high-contrast ratio which makes it easy to read, and it relies on ambient light rather than back light, making it less likely to cause eye strain. In addition, it only consumes power when the screen is refreshed making it very energy efficient.
The LG Display developers see their flexible e-paper screens as a potential base for newspapers in the future. Like book readers, the e-newspaper can be regularly updated with news, but does not require printing or distribution of a physical newspaper and in addition to text and pictures could potentially employ video as well. LG Display plans to begin the mass production of an 11.5-inch flexible electronic paper screen in the first half of this year.
