Choose Words Carefully

Our words have such a powerful impact on people. It is so easy to say something the wrong way, or to be perceived in a negative fashion. Even subtle negativity can actually raise the stress level of the person you are trying to sell to. Choose your words carefully.

Below is a short list of words and phrases that can help to maintain a positive tone to your sales conversations. In a sales situation, these words are often better to use than equivalent ones that might come otherwise naturally come to mind.

  • More economical (is better than, cheaper)
  • Offers less value (is better than, is worth less)
  • Based on my experience(is better than, let me tell you)
  • Safer(is better than, less dangerous)
  • This is a breakthrough(is better than, this is the latest thing)
  • Initial investment (is better than, down payment)
  • It’s easy (is better than, it’s not difficult)
  • I'm a firm believer in (is better than, I think)
  • Take my advice (is better than, listen to me)
  • I apologize (is better than, I’m sorry)

You get the idea. This list is short, but you should look for phrases in your own current sales lexicon that might need amending. It’s a good idea to incorporate more positive word choices in your presentations right away. Get in the habit of using them with your prospects and you will find that you become a more effective salesman, and may just help you increase your sales.
