Daktronics Announces Contest Winner

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Bill Ortmeier from Stein Sign Display in Watertown, S.D. won a sign design contest for his work with First United Methodist Church in Huron, S.D. The contest was part of Daktronics 2012 Sales Expo, an annual event hosted by Daktronics for sign company personnel. At the evening banquet, three contestants presented their entries and the audience voted in Ortmeier’s favor. He thinks part of the reason he won was his presentation approach.

“I didn’t have a prepared speech or PowerPoint put together,” Ortmeier said. “I’ve been selling signs for 24 years, so I decided to focus on what I know and just talk about my sign and how I appreciate the relationships you build with people when you’re selling anything.”

To enter the contest, sign companies submitted a design of a sign they worked on in the last year featuring a Daktronics product.

“I was surprised and delighted to learn that I won the contest, especially since at first I didn’t really realize what I was getting into,” Ortmeier said.

Daktronics hosts a monthly photo contest for sign companies with a prize of $50 and Ortmeier originally thought he was entering something similar. When he found out he had to present his design to an audience, he grew nervous but decided to stay in the contest to see where it would go. As he plays around with the iPad he won in his office and figures out how best to put his new device to use, he is glad he didn’t back out.

“Winning was awesome. It just made the day, the month, the whole year,” he said. “It was very, very exciting and what a great prize to win.”

The Sign Design contest takes place each year at Daktronics Sales Expo — a tuition-free annual conference hosted by Daktronics for sign companies across North America. This year, 47 people from 34 sign companies and 14 states/provinces attended, travelling from as far away as Alaska, Manitoba and New York state.

For more than two decades, the Sales Expo has helped sign industry personnel sell digital displays more successfully. It’s an opportunity for sign companies to learn about Daktronics digital products and to participate in sales strategy sessions. Daktronics records reveal that after the 2011 Sales Expo, attendees sold an average of 20 percent more digital displays during the following year.

Next year’s Sales Expo will take place Sept.12-13, 2013 in Brookings, S.D. More information is available at www.daktronics.com/SalesExpoInformation.
