Findlay, Ohio-based Rowmark LLC recently gave back to its community by sponsoring and participating in Walk a Mile in Her Shoes—a charity event to benefit the Open Arms Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Services organization in Findlay. The nonprofit provides support for individuals affected by domestic violence and sexual assault through crisis intervention, emergency shelter, outreach, advocacy, prevention and education.
“This event is for men and boys to show their support for the agency and to increase awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault,” says Rowmark communication specialist Margaret Ford. “Participants don high-heeled shoes and walk a mile-long route.” There are also activities for families and food vendors to give the event a positive atmosphere.
Ford explains that in addition to sponsoring the event and fielding a team of male walkers, Rowmark also made additional contributions to support the walk's participants.
“Although walking a mile in women’s shoes is a symbolic gesture, this event asks men to truly consider the outcomes of sexualized violence,” says Rowmark vice president of finance Victor Siewert, who has also served as a past president and is a current board member of Open Arms Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Services.
“They’re asked to talk about it with other men and do what they can to prevent it from happening to women. It is also a way for men and boys to show their support to those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault in our community.”
The motivation to get involved, he says, is a continuous effort to support its local community. “Rowmark is a great corporate citizen, and this is just another way we show that,” Siewert says, adding that it’s also a fun event and a great way to build camaraderie between the men involved.
Rowmark participates in multiple charity events throughout the year, including the recent Hancock County Heart Walk in mid-April. The next big event the company plans to support is the local United Way fundraising campaign.
